The Environmental Working Group (EWG) website has a consumer guide that ranks skincare products from low to high hazard. I am pleased to note that Moor Spa is ranked the safest natural brand compared to its peers. Nevertheless I thought you may find it useful to refer to the guidelines below when choosing the right skincare product. The ingredients on the ‘avoid list’ below appear in many cosmetics and skin care:

Nevertheless I thought you may find it useful to refer to the guidelines below when choosing the right skincare product. The ingredients on the ‘avoid list’ below appear in many cosmetics and skin care:

  1. Sulphates aka SLES, SLS. Sodium laureth sulphate in soaps, shampoos and bath ‘bombs’ is to create foam. However constant use may cause skin irritations  to some. If you are like me are sensitive to chemicals it is best to reduce the use of these compounds.
  2. Parabens Family – Methyl, Propyl, Butyl, Iso and Ethyl parabens.
Parabens are used in many cosmetics and food products as a preservative. They inhibit microbial growth. Some scientific research has linked them to breast cancer. So try to consume less products that are preserved with Parabens. Moor Spa uses products with ingredients from 100% natural source.
  3. Mineral Oil. It is a petroleum derivative. It is used in cosmetics and skin care because it is very economical. It acts to hold moisture in for the skin but mineral oil also clogs pores, analogous to a plastic on top of the skin to hold moisture in. What it actually does is clog pores which may cause acne.
  4. 1, 4 Dioxane. It is a solvent used in some cosmetics and shampoos. It can cause liver and kidney damage. 1, 4 Dioxan has been shown to cause cancer in rats.
  5. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). These are chemical compounds that are used as binders. They may be indiscriminately used in hair styling gels, waxes and hairsprays. There have been documented cases of allergic reactions to PVP.
  6. PEG; formaldehyde donors. It is known to be carcinogenic. Besides irritating the skin, it may cause headaches and fatigue.
  7. Toluene. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a distinctive smell. It may affect the cardiovascular system (heart anb blood vessels), and the nervous system.
  8. Synthetic Dyes & Colors. They are colours that make your cosmetics attractive and they are made from coal tar. Coal tar contains heavy metal salts that over time leave toxins in our skin which may lead to irritation. Check that the dyes used are used for food colouring.
  9. Perfumes. Fragrances can be filled with thousands of individual chemical compounds which may be toxic. If you are allergic to perfumed products, you may experience headaches, red eyes, and skin irritation. Select products with pure essential oils which are safe and you are comfortable with.
  10. BHT or Butylated hydroxytoluene. BHT is used in many packages, such as cereal as a food preservative and in some cosmetics. BHT is said to possess carcinogenic properties.
  11. Propylene Gycol (PG). It is found to provoke allergic reactions in users with eczema and other skin allergies. In small amounts, used infrequently, propylene glycol may not have negative health effects. If one wants to be on the safe side, there are alternatives.
